It is important, but one of a large number of other factors that are equally important.
Familiarity improves mostly during training camp, then secondarily during each game sim for plays you scout, then a small amount for each play that you face or execute. The player must be on the field to benefit from the play being called.
This tab is still there, but it does disappear if you don't own a team in the league because it is showing that player's familiarity with -your- playbook
Because your players will gain familiarity during training camp with your entire playbook, players who have been around a long time will have high familiarity with a large number of plays.
